Round "Stuff"

Emma S., who most of you probably know as a student in our school (class of 2014) came into my classroom excitedly demanding (as she occasionally does) to borrow my camera to take a picture. So I gave her a camera, she took a few shots, and that was the end of it. I opened the flash drive up this weekend, looking for some shot to post on the site, and there was this one. Unusual, but what fascinated me the most was that she saw this image in her mind as a photograph and couldn't wait to capture it! Talk about artistic habits of mind! I hope you all develop this sense in this class! So comment (tweet-sized please!) on this picture, and the first to identify the image will win a prize.

I've also posted a screenshot of the image data from iPhoto, which shows the camera, the size of the photo, the f-stop and shutter speed used to make the picture, and the film speed setting.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your portrait work on your blogs on Wednesday (by the end of school)!

  1. Depth of field is the clue... thanks for providing this Emma!

  2. Is it a paper cup with dried liquid in it? Maybe coffee? Very good picture! I love how the bottom almost looks like it is shinny, but it is just the contrast with the white and the dark brown.

  4. I love the textures in this! It's a great photograph. The contrast at the bottom of the cup really draws the eye.

  5. Great photo overall. The emphasis is already on the base of the cup (as Kate so deftly pointed out) because of its color and reflective qualities, but the lines of what I'm assuming is hot chocolate, but either way some sort of beverage that run down the sides of the cup serve to wonderfully draw the eye to the focal point.

  6. Very interesting photo! The eye is drawn to the bottom of the cup, where the lines of dried liquid are all leading. There is also a great deal of texture in this photo. The pattern in which the liquid dried on the side, almost emphasized the lack of texture in the middle, again making it a focal point. Great photograph Emma! Really cool :)

  7. I like the monochromatic-ness of this picture. It brings forth a sense of unity and really ties the image together!

  8. I really like the colors and textures in this photo, but I would have never guessed what it really is!

  9. This is so cool! I love the bottom of the cup and how it cracks, and also the light coming through on the left side.

  10. I doubt that I would have seen something like that as a photo. The reflection from the center spot adds a nice touch.

  11. I really like the way the crusty stuff at the bottom is chipping away and flowing down the sides of what i can imagine to be an old coffee cup

  12. Wow a coffee cup! I thought it was some sort of starfish at first.

  13. This picture is puzzling, and creates some wondering for the viewer. It's great that she was able to look at that and say, this will make a good picture, because it certainly did.
